Breaking the Stigma: Why Seeking Help Is a Sign of Strength for Youth Ages 13–25

Hello!
For too long, mental health has been treated like a secret — something to whisper about or hide behind a smile. But the truth is, mental health is just as important as physical health, and it’s time we start treating it that way. At the GameStrong Foundation, we witness firsthand the impact of unspoken struggles on our youth, particularly those aged 13 to 25, as they navigate the pressures of school, family, friendships, identity, and an increasingly online world.
Anxiety and depression have become two of the most common challenges facing young people today. Yet, too many still feel ashamed or afraid to ask for help. They worry about being judged, misunderstood, or seen as “weak.†But real strength comes from recognizing when something isn’t right and choosing to do something about it. Seeking professional help doesn’t mean you’ve failed — it means you care enough about yourself to heal and grow.
Whether it’s talking to a therapist, joining a support group, or confiding in someone you trust, these steps are acts of courage. They are the first moves toward building emotional resilience, self-awareness, and confidence. When we talk openly about anxiety, depression, and mental health, we show that it’s okay not to be okay — and that help is available.
At the GameStrong Foundation, our mission is to break that silence and provide a safe space for youth to find their voice and strength. Through our programs, events, and community partnerships in Brooklyn and beyond, we’re creating a culture where mental health is prioritized, and help is normalized. Because getting help is not giving up — it’s leveling up.
If you or someone you know between the ages of 13 and 25 is struggling with anxiety, depression, or stress, remember: you are not alone. Speak up. Reach out. Healing starts with one brave step — and we’re here to walk it with you.
Let’s break the stigma, together.
